Celebrating Diversity
Rhythmix Island Arts Concert Series honors island traditions from around the world, on the island of Alameda. Presenting four concerts with the theme Celebrating Diversity, Rhythmix featuring the music and dance traditions of Cuba, Tahiti, Japan and Indonesia, with well-known Bay Area artists Jesús Díaz, Māhealani Uchiyama and Hālau Ka Ua Tuahine, Gamelan Sekar Jaya and Maze Daiko.
Journeying through the Caribbean and Pacific to the Java Sea and the Sea of Japan, audience members will gain an appreciation and understanding of the variety of ways that culture is expressed and celebrated through a sampling of the dance and music of these island nations.
Doors open at 7:00pm with food and drink available for purchase.

Cuban born percussionist and vocalist Jesús Díaz explores the role that music plays in the cultural identity, history and geography of the Caribbean islands, most notably, Cuba through a blend of contemporary and traditional practices.
Māhealani Uchiyama and Hālau Ka Ua Tuahine will take you on a journey to the islands of Tahiti with an evening of ʻōteʻa, ʻaparima and mehura accompanied by live singing and a traditional Tahitian drum orchestra.
Gamelan Sekar Jaya specializes in the Balinese performing arts, where details of music and dance are tightly coordinated, and an ideal of perfect unity is sought in every gesture, nuance, expression, phrase, and rhythmic change.
Breaking from traditional taiko performance, Maze Daiko seamlessly blends Japanese, West African, Middle Eastern, Brazilian, Persian and Western instrumentation into its repertoire, creating fresh sonic textures with inspiration from islands around the world.
