Explore three dance genres with their rhythms, songs, and history from Oriente Cuba (the eastern part of the island). This is a unique opportunity to be introduced to parts of Cuban culture that aren’t widely taught outside of Cuba, by two instructors from Guantanamo.
Please bring, although not required, the following:
- A percussion instrument (conga, cajon, claves, sticks, bells, etc).
- Your folklore skirt for dancing.
- Your water bottle. Food is not allowed in the studio.
- Audio recording devices are allowed but filming is not.
- We will be taking video for marketing purposes. If you do not want to be filmed please let us know before class.

Bios:
Royland Lobato is from Guantanamo, Cuba. After dancing with Grupo Ban Rara, he became a founding member and choreographer for Siete Potencias, an Afro Cuban dance and music ensemble specializing in Afro-Cuban folklore and Franco-Haitian genres. Mr. Lobato also teaches rumba and other popular Cuban dances. He has been teaching throughout the Bay Area since 2005 and is known for his patient and accessible instruction.
Angel Mulen-Robert grew up learning traditional and popular Afro-Cuban percussion and songs from master musicians and dancers in Guantanamo, Cuba. He is a respected lead vocalist, percussionist, teacher, and arranger of Afro-Cuban folklore, Franco-Haitian genres, and traditional Cuban dance music. Mr. Mulen-Robert has performed abroad extensively with Danza Libre of Guantanamo, Cuba and Habana Sonlar. He worked with Siete Potenicias of Havana, and now teaches and performs in the Bay Area.
