Ed Holmes

Ed Holmes

Ed Holmes (aka Lazlo Bean-dip) started in the 50s with an instamatic camera. Snapshots. His first visit to Japan in ‘66, courtesy of the USN, he acquired his first ‘serious’ cameras to attempt replicating the work of his photo heroes, Robert Frank, Paul Strand, Bresson. Alas, his most satisfying photos were his mistakes; accidents of double exposure, wrong metering, “bad” composition. He enjoyed the surprises of his mistakes more than my amateur intentions. Using inferior equipment, toy and novelty film cameras, and now adapting that approach with digital cameras of various qualities, his “method, “ is exploring new avenues of surprise and, for him, delight.

“The Lazlo Bean-dip School of Jalopy Photography doesn’t push the boundaries of photography, it just ignores them.”
