The Rhythm Café was created by Patricio Angulo for the San Francisco Symphony’s Adventures in Music program. Featuring Bay Area percussionists: Patricio Angulo (congas, Cuba), Jeff Pierre (mama drum, Haiti), Jesse Weber (cuica, Brazil; agogo, Ghana), Kim Agnew (chekere, Ghana) and Robert Wallace (surdo, Brazil), students are introduced to the music and rhythms of Latin America and the Caribbean. The Rhythm Café ensemble has performed for thousands of students in San Francisco public schools and is committed to furthering arts education opportunities for East Bay youth.

Director Mythili Kumar founded the Abhinaya Dance Company of San Jose in 1980 to present innovative and professional quality performances of South Indian classical dance forms. Mythili’s artistic ability and the high quality of her dance choreography have been recognized in the U.S where she has been awarded several Choreographer’s Fellowships from the National Endowment for the Arts. Appearing several times in the San Francisco Ethnic Dance Festival, Abhinaya has also been featured in many Asian Performing Arts Festivals. Mythili taught at Stanford and San Jose State, and currently teaches at UC Santa Cruz. In 2010, she was honored by World Arts West with the Malonga Casquelord Lifetime Achievement Award and received an Isadora Duncan Sustained Achievement Award in 2011. Most recently, she received the 2015 Legacy Laureate Award from SVCreates for her sustained dedication to dance.

Linda Tillery and the Cultural Heritage Choir is a Grammy © nominated, percussion driven, vocal ensemble whose mission is to preserve and share the rich musical traditions of African American roots music. Their music is rooted in the deep south and strongly connected to their West African and Caribbean origins. The Cultural Heritage Choir transports their audience through stick, song, dance and story, to a place in time when the roots of American popular music were just being sewn by “involuntary immigrants” from West Africa. World-renowned for their compelling performances and commitment to the authenticity of African-American roots music, the ensemble includes: Linda Tillery, Rhonda Benin, Tamala Brown, Elouise Burrell, Bryan Dyer and Simon Monserrat.
