Karate is a martial art that has it’s roots traced back to Okinawa. Karate is not simply a tool to develop self defense skills, but will also develop mind, body, and character. Also, Karate can help develop friendship and a means of gaining self-understanding and self-confidence. One of the important themes of training is harmony. One should not seek out confrontation, but to do everything possible to avoid it. Harmony is not just important with those you train with, but also everyone you come in contact with outside the dojo.
Karate is an excellent way to achieve and maintain physical fitness. Karate incorporates the use of the entire body: legs, hips, spine, shoulders, and arms. In coordination they develop balance, speed, strength, flexibility, stamina, and poise.
Karate training consists of three areas: Kihon (basics), Kata, and Kumite (sparring). Kihon involves the development of various blocks, strikes, punches, and kicks. Kata involves a sequence of pre-determined defensive and offensive movements performed individually. Kumite is where you apply the techniques learned from Kihon with a partner. Kumite is generally pre-determined, especially at the beginner to intermediate levels, with emphasis placed on showing control and respect for your partner.
Sensei Enkhbold Amarjargal and Sensei Kevin Slauson have both achieved the rank of 4th Dan and have taught in Alameda since 2010.
What To Bring: New students should wear comforable clothing and bring a water bottle. Once students decide that they want to continue they can purchase a gi (uniform).
