Bagua Zhang (also referred to simply as “Bagua”) is
a Chinese martial art and
energy art, much like its better-known cousin Tai Chi Chuan. Bagua
is characterized
by smooth, circular movements and open-hand techniques. Like Tai
Chi, Bagua is
practiced with complete relaxation, with the body's energy “rooted”,
and can be
practiced slowly (like Tai Chi) or at regular speed.
The name Bagua Zhang means “Eight Trigrams Palm”, with
the eight trigrams
referring to the symbols of the I-Ching, the Chinese “Book
of Changes”, and the
word “palm” referring to the fact that the movements
are done with open hands as
opposed to closed fists. The theory and concepts of Bagua Zhang are
rooted in the
philosophical concept of constant change as embodied in the I-Ching.
Bagua is an excellent practice for people of all ages and body types
who wish to
develop powerful, yet graceful, body movement, balance, relaxation,
improved
health and well-being.
