Creatures of Culture
May 14th - June 4th
Opening reception: May 14 6-9pm
in conjuntion with Estuary Art Attack
Charlie Milgrim's work explores, dissects and reconfigures perceptions of stuffed animals from the banal to the sublimely ridiculous. Abandoning the distinction between furry creatures and cuddly animals, an underlying theme of this work addresses consumerism in desperate and twisted times. The shapes, colors and textures of these plush pets are distorted into edgy social symbology.
Consumerism is further abstracted through modern day arts education in the form of mosaic self- portraits made from paint chip samples by students in Milgrim's Art 1 classes at Alameda High School. Her advanced students are also exhibiting cardboard sculpture and foam core architectural models and drawings that were inspired by a range of styles from Baroque to Futuristic.
About the artist:
"As an artist living in this unhinged world, I respond by working with materials that harness gravity as an active element. Using materials that would otherwise become landfill, such as discarded bowling balls, I repurpose them to function as conceptual reminders of delicately balanced or potentially destructive forces both natural and political." bowlingdigital.com
